What is ESTA?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a mandatory online application system for travelers entering the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Instead of applying for a traditional visa, eligible citizens from VWP countries, including the Czech Republic, must obtain ESTA approval before boarding a plane or ship to the U.S. for short visits. ESTA is not a visa — it is a travel authorization that screens travelers before they arrive in the United States. The system helps U.S. authorities assess potential security or immigration risks in advance.

ESTA Application
The ESTA application must be completed online and includes personal information, passport details, and a short eligibility questionnaire. Once approved, ESTA is generally valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, you can enter the U.S. multiple times for up to 90 days per visit. ESTA is required even for transit through the U.S. en route to another country. Travelers are advised to apply at least 72 hours before their departure, although most receive a decision within minutes.

Avoid Surprises at the Airport – Know Your ESTA Rules
While ESTA approval allows you to travel to a U.S. port of entry, it does not guarantee admission. Final entry decisions are made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers upon arrival. It’s important to ensure all information submitted in the application is accurate, as errors could lead to delays or denial of entry. If your ESTA application is denied, you will need to apply for a regular U.S. visa instead. Always travel with the passport linked to your approved ESTA and keep a copy of the confirmation for your records.
